The Joseph L Popp, Jr. Butterfly Conservatory
is a tropical butterfly and bird exhibit featuring free flying tropical butterflies and birds from around the world. You can walk among them and enjoy their beauty. This is a great place for photography. There are approximately 30 species of colorful birds, and any of hundreds of different butterflies may be seen, depending on their availability in their native lands.
Open daily from 9-5, closed Christmas,Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.
A great place to relax and experience the tropics for under $10.00!

Availability
The Popp Butterfly Conservatory is open 7 days a week from 9-5 and from 9-4 in the winter.
Closed Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Essential Information
The conservatory is all indoors,the sun is always shining there whatever the outside weather. It is always around 80 degrees and sunny inside.
Flash photography is not permitted, tripods are permitted.
The animals are very happy in their surroundings. They may not be touched, followed, or imitated, this especially applies to the birds and tortoises. Please respect them.
An outdoor butterfly garden in currently being planted outside, where visitors will be able to visit with the native butterflies. Progress is underway.
Come see the beautiful planted stone butterfly, the 7 foot tall tree man, the 12 foot tall dancing people, and the dried butterfly display as well!
Occasionally, there is a festival held in the garden, with live Irish music.

Duration
Visitors have stayed from half an hour to six hours, the average being about an hour and a half.

What to Wear
If you would like a butterfly to land on you, while there are no guarantees, their favorite color is red, the brighter the better. They also like clothing with flowers on it.
If you would prefer not to be landed on, try brown or black, although, again, there are no guarantees they won't find you irresistable anyway!
The temperature inside is always 80 to 85 degrees, so if the weather is cold, dress in removable layers.

Directions
The conservatory is located about two minutes from Exit 16 of I-88, about two miles east of the city of Oneonta. There is a big butterfly sign at the parking lot.
