Wild Animals in Brooklyn - closeup! at Prospect Park Zoo

Phone: 718 399 7339

The Prospect Park Zoo is the fifth facility in New York City’s unique network of renowned wildlife sanctuaries operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the international conservation organization headquartered at the Bronx Zoo.

Set among lovely old world architecture, the charming 12 acre Prospect Park Zoo features three major thematic zones, a central court with a sea lion pool and gardens, and a “petting zoo” where visitors can feed a variety of goats, sheep and alpaca.

California sea lions always take center stage with three feeding demonstrations a day. Other favorites include great grey kangaroos and their smaller cousins, wallabies; playful meerkats are always on the alert, golden lion tamarins (small South American monkeys) are bright and engaging and the small red pandas are beautiful to behold. There are also numerous brilliantly colored birds and interesting reptiles and amphibians on exhibit. The piece de resistance is the magnificent troop of Hamadryas baboons whose social interactions are always fascinating.

The zoo features a small gift shop and state-of-the-art vending café. A true treasure in an urban setting, the zoo is open 365 days a year.
