Nurture your mind, body and soul with a relaxing cruise on Raquette Lake! at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks
It's fascinating to visit a place where history has happened. New York's Central Adirondack region has a distinctively rich history and there are countless stories to tell about the people who lived, worked and played in this six million acre wilderness area.
Couple the history with breathtaking scenery and delicious food prepared by Culinary Institute of America graduate Chef Jim Pohl, and you've got a recipe for an unforgettable experience you can't wait to repeat!
The Gilded Age period in American history spanned the turn of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th, when New York City Captains of Industry built the first of their Great Camps in Raquette Lake. William West Durant built Pine Knot and sold it to Collis P Huntington of Union Pacific RR fame. He then built Uncas and sold it to JP Morgan. His final masterpiece was Sagamore, sold to Alfred Vanderbilt. All three Great Camps, Pine Knot located on Raquette Lake and the other two on their own lakes nearby, are National Historic Landmarks. Other Great Camps on the lake include Echo, owned by Conn. Governor Phinneas Lounsbury and 6 subsequent generations of Lounsbury heirs as well as Bluff Point, owned by the Collier publishing family and North Point, owned by the Carnegie family. The captain's narration will help bring this Gilded Age period back to life through imaginative description and anecdotes.
