Hudson River Way at Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau
Opened in Spring, 2002, the Hudson River Way links Albany´s past to its present and future. A pedestrian bridge that connects downtown Albany to a waterfront park on the banks of the historic Hudson River, the Hudson River Way is both an architectural wonder and an outdoor museum. More than 11,000 citizens, individuals, corporations, organizations, and community members helped build the River Way by purchasing bricks inscribed with personalized messages that grace the walkway surface.
In addition to the engraved bricks, thirty ornate lampposts light the River Way. Each lamppost’s base is decorated with a painted illustration of actual historic artifacts discovered during recent archeological digs in the City of Albany. These one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork were created by local trompe l’oeil artist Jan Marie Spanard and others from AlbanyMural.
With the help of a team from Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc., Spanard and her staff assembled the artifacts in a cohesive and artful manner to depict specific time periods in Albany’s history. Trompe l´oiel painting, designed to “trick the eye,” was made famous by Dutch artists during the 17th century. Other trompe l´oiel paintings adorn a variety of sites throughout the city and honors Albany’s Dutch heritage.
Incorporating these paintings as public art on the walkway creates a fun and exciting, as well as educational environment for young and old.
