Hudson Athens LIghthouse Preservation Society at Hudson Athens Lighthouse
The Hudson Athens Lighthouse is a restored 1874 lighthouse uniquely situate in middle of the Hudson River between the City of Hudson and the Village of Athens Columbia and Greene Counties, New York.
It is a registered New York State museum, a registered historical building and a Community Ambassador for the New York State Quadricentennial.
It is open to the public for tours the second Saturday of each month July through October via a ferry from Athens or Hudson. It is open for private occasions, meetings and retreats by prior arrangement. Electricity and bottled water are available as well as a composting toilet.
The site is accessible only via motorized boat, canoe or kayak. A dock is available May through October for mooring.
The building consists of a first story with a restored kitchen complete with coal cook stove, drop leaf table and meal sink, a dining room and radio room, The second story consists of four bed rooms one of which is currently used as a story for lighthouse related items, a second for a lighthouse replica exhibit room and the remaining two rooms as bedrooms dating to 1940; the period the lighthouse was automated and the lighthouse keeper and family moved to shore. The third story is a tower that contains a green flashing channel marker light that is still maintained by the Coast Guard as a navigational aid. This light is 52 feet above the river surface and the walkway that surrounds it offers spectacular views of the River Valley and Catskill Mountains. A full basement contains the remains of the last coal shipment used to heat the lighthouse, a workshop and water cistern. The main deck surrounding the brick structure forms the shape of a ship and deflects the winter ice as it flows toward the ocean and give ample outside area for dining and viewing the many boats as they pass by.
This lighthouse is one of the last remaining along the Hudson River and is very worthy of your visit, Whether for a day or an overnight getaway or weekend retreat.
