The New York City fire Museum occupies a renovated 1904 Beaux-Arts firehouse built for Engine Company 30. The original apparatus doors, housewatch entrance, stone floor, brass sliding pole and hose tower remind visitors of the building's former role.
Permanent and temporary exhibitions document the evolution of firefighting technology, beginning with the early bucket brigades, and depict the traditions and romantic lore of firefighting.
The Museum houses one of the nation's most important collections of fire related art and artifacts from the late 18th century to the present. Among its holdings are painted leather buckets, helmets, parade hats and belts, lanterns and tools, pre-Civil War hand pumped fire engines, horse-drawn vehicles and early motorized apparatus. A permanent September 11th exhibit and memorial is also open.
