Olana, the home and studio of Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, is a New York State Historic Site and a National Historic Landmark.
Church laid out miles of roads at Olana as he created his “living landscape.” Church composed landscape scenes contrasting broad pastoral vistas with woodland intimacy, sun-dappled carriage roads with dark enveloping forests and the blue distant mountains with the bright waters of the lake and river. The shifts in light, atmosphere and seasons caused frequent changes in these scenes. The artist wrote, “I can make more and better landscapes in this way than my tampering with canvas and paint in the studio.”
Olana is one of seven historic sites and thirteen parks administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Taconic Region. The Olana Partnership is a private not-for-profit organization which works cooperatively with New York State to support the preservation, restoration, development, and improvement of Olana State Historic Site.
